About Meghan
A proud alumna of Hauppauge High School, Meghan Smith is a New York State Certified School Counselor and School Attendance Teacher and a graduate of the Master’s in School Counseling program at New York Institute of Technology. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and Public Policy with a concentration in Health from SUNY Cortland, where her studies in education policy and internship under Brentwood Legislator (LD-9) Sam Gonzalez sparked her passion for education reform and student advocacy.
Meghan believes that meaningful school counseling begins with ensuring students feel supported, connected, and able to access their education. As both a School Counselor and certified School Attendance Teacher, she is particularly passionate about supporting students experiencing school avoidance and addressing the academic, social-emotional, and systemic barriers that can make coming to school feel overwhelming. Her goal is to help lift some of the weight off students’ shoulders by meeting them where they are, identifying the root of their challenges, and working collaboratively with students, families, educators, and support teams to create realistic pathways forward.
Meghan remains committed to staying informed about evolving educational policies, research, and best practices so that her work reflects the changing needs of students and school communities. She believes that the Portrait of a Graduate begins the moment a student steps into school and that counselors play an important role in helping students develop the confidence, resilience, self-advocacy, and skills they will carry beyond graduation. With experience supporting students from kindergarten through 12th grade, Meghan approaches counseling with the belief that every stage of a student’s education contributes to the person they ultimately become.
Above all, Meghan strives to be a lifelong learner and an advocate for safe, inclusive, and student-centered school communities. Outside of education, she enjoys playing guitar and attending concerts, especially anything Rock ’n’ Roll.
